- π Embracing the Equine Journey: A Symphony of Steps and Milestones π
In the enchanting dance of horse training, let's talk about the delicate balance between keeping our eyes on the grand horizon and savoring every step of the journey. The Bigger Picture: Like a captivating painting waiting to be unveiled, the bigger picture in horse training is essential. It sets the direction, the dream we strive for. However, let's not forget that the masterpiece is not just in the destination but in every brushstroke, every intentional step we take along the way. Clear Intentions for the Journey: Shaping clear intentions for all the million steps on this fascinating journey becomes the melody in this symphony. Each note, each stride, is purposeful β mini-goals crafted with care, forming the sweet music of progress. It's in these deliberate steps that we find the hidden treasures of the equine journey. Therefore it is crucial to shape a more tailor-made intention for where we are at. So be in the moment of where you are in your education and appreciate what matches this level of education. This for sure is not the bigger picture quality but maybe a willing response, a trying hard to figure something out, one first balanced step in the right direction, et cetera. Beautiful Gifts Along the Way: Every training session, every moment with our horses, offers gifts β the beautiful building blocks to our desired masterpiece. If we only have our eyes fixed on the end goal, we might miss the small, exquisite details that form the heart and soul of our journey. Reachable Goals for Radiant Vibes: Imagine a training session where every goal is a "YES" for your horse or at least an "oh, I don't know but I think I can figure that out" and with this a cause for celebration. Setting reachable goals and as small approximations as necessary becomes the magic wand that keeps motivation and positive vibes soaring. Your horse, like a partner in a dance, is eager in every step, creating a harmonious connection. The Power of Celebration: Rather than waiting for the perfect end goal, let's celebrate every little milestone. No matter how little it might look from the outside, it might be huge for this horse on that special day in this special situation and at this level of education. In celebrating these important 'little' things, we nurture motivation, interest, and a sense of pride within our equine companions. Supporting the Journey: Even if the bigger picture remains a distant dream, the journey becomes a sanctuary of appreciation, love, understanding, and support for our horses. By embracing each stride and celebrating achievements, we offer a foundation of positivity that helps our equine friends figure things out with confidence and joy. In the waltz of horse training, let's find joy in every step, celebrate the journey, and create a partnership where every milestone - no matter how little - is cherished, and the bond between rider and horse grows stronger with each passing day. - πΒ Noticing thresholds and embracing the RRR moments π
This post is inspired by a wonderful student of mine, and I believe many can relate! π΄Β How often do we find ourselves caught in the rush, the desire to achieve more, and meet external expectations? Guilty as charged! πββοΈ Taking a moment to give the horse the freedom to explore, investigate, and figure things out he initially worries about and RRR (Release, Reward, Relax) his slightest thought is a powerful practice. πΒ It's easy to get swept up in the need for progress, performance, or meeting goals, but the magic lies in those seemingly small moments. Acknowledging the simplicity of taking the cavesson or bridle willingly, independently parking at the mounting block, allowing the saddle on the back in a relaxed way, willingly leaving the paddock or entering the arena, et cetera, may seem trivial, but it's a cornerstone to building a foundation of trust, understanding, and true partnership with our equine companions. π€Β Because we need to notice the feedback our horse is giving us and take their thresholds seriously. No matter when and where they occur. These are the moments that might not make the highlight reel, yet they are the building blocks of a beautiful relationship where the horse feels seen and feels that his worries are taken seriously. That doesn't mean to not do things but be patient and give them more time to figure things out or get used to it. Make it easier where necessary to ask more and more questions where the horse is willing and motivated to say YES. Because when it's their conscious choice everything is much easier, relaxed, and effortless. These trivial moments are where it starts and we need to be careful to not blow through thresholds already here and then wonder why something else later is not as easy as it could be. We, myself included, often feel the pressure to showcase progress, and keep pushing forward, and this is most of the time at the expense of the horse. π₯πΒ However, being aware of the above reminds us that the real breakthroughs come when we appreciate the journey, no matter how incremental. π And, although the progress might seem quite slow in the beginning, it will be much more easy and effective in the long run. Let's challenge ourselves to break free from the constraints of external expectations and simply be the example we want to see. π±Β And, especially as a trainer, be authentic in what you teach and what you breathe. By embracing each small step, each nuance of progress, we honor our horses and allow them to grow into self-confident, happy athletes. Let's continue to explore the depths of mindful training, nurturing our horses' minds, and creating a space where the universe of possibilities unfolds. πΒ Here's to the beauty of the journey! πΒ #ReleaseRewardRelax #EquestrianJourney #MindfulTraining π
- Unlocking True Understanding: The Art of Layering Questions in Horse Training!
In the world of horse training, it's not just about giving commands; it's about fostering a genuine connection through layered questions. π€π π Layering questions involves breaking down tasks into tiny, manageable steps. Just like building a strong foundation, it's crucial to start with the basics and gradually add complexity. ποΈ π Each layer builds upon the last, creating a staircase of learning that allows your equine companion to truly grasp the concept at their own pace. πβ¨ π Remember, the key lies in understanding the unique character of your horse. What works for one may not work for another, emphasizing the importance of tailoring your approach to their individual needs. π€ π π£οΈ Communication is a two-way street. Pay attention to your horse's responses; it's their truth that matters. Sometimes, what we think is an appropriate approximation might differ from their perspective. πΎπ π Let's embark on this journey of discovery together, respecting the rhythm and understanding the language of our four-legged friends! π΄π #HorseTraining #LayeredQuestions #UnderstandingEquines #EquestrianConnection #CommunicationIsKey

- LOVE IT or CHANGE IT by Karen Rohlf
I just came across a brilliant little video of Karen Rohlf . I love the way she is explaining things and in this little video, which is her or one of her talks at the Journey To Podcast Summit 2022, she is talking about the concept 'Love it or change it - the key to happiness'. This video resonates so much with me. Maybe some of you already saw it or know it, but still, if so, I think it is worth rewatching... I think, making this profound concept our mantra in our life with horses and in general will not only transform our being and doing with horses but also seeps into the very fabric of our lives. Β As Karen so nicely said, horses are very good metaphors for life. Β LOVE IT or CHANGE IT: The Guiding Principle to more happiness and harmony with those three 'simple' choices: Β Love It, Love It More, or Change It Thank you so much for such a brilliant talk and inspiration, Karen ! https://youtu.be/AE-SHIUpFBU?si=vptT1PyCO2etS7ng

She uses a variety of teaching strategies to help us all learn. I'm so glad I joined the PIB program!" "I've been a PIB member since the very beginning, and training with Carolin even long before its inception. I love Carolin's calm and grounded nature. No matter what you are working on, she always seems to have a solution and a new path to try. She can always clearly explain the why's and how's of any exercise or changes she wants to see in your horse. Not only do I gain help with my own horses, but as a trainer, I have learned better ways to communicate with my own students. Carolin can always turn a negative situation into a positive and always leaves you feeling like no matter how much improvement you need, that it's attainable and points out beautiful moments in your training to strive for more of. I have had several of my own students join the PIB membership, as it only makes my job easier when they have her feedback as well, and I feel super comfortable sharing my own clients with such a respectful professional." A huge thank you to all my members for making PIB's first year truly remarkable! Β Here's to many more years of growth, learning, and shared successes. Β #PIBBirthdayΒ #Gratitude Β #communitylove
- Nothing is really Something
'The truth is, Nothing is really Something. When we let go of our doing and thinking, we are free to notice everything that IS. We are free to FEEL. The fear of what we can't do is replaced by the possibility of what can happen. We can start to be like the horses...' Karen RohlfΒ Love this, we as humans are so much in the doing and achieving mode in general and also with our horses, that we completely underestimate the value, benefit, and opportunities just BEING can offer ... - Embracing the Beauty in the Basics
Just wanted to share a little nugget of wisdom that I've come to appreciate on my equestrian journey - "The beauty lies in the basics!" Polishing those foundational skills not only sets the stage for success but also makes tackling the advanced stuff a breeze. Teaching becomes a joyful dance when you've mastered the fundamentals. It's crucial to be present in the moment, closely observing our horses' feedback. Β Those subtle cues reveal the blind spots and missing pieces that might be holding us back. It's like finding the puzzle pieces that complete the picture! Repetition is key, but mindless repetition won't cut it. Β For example, repeating the still unbalanced and feeling awful canter over and over again, won't improve it. Or repeating laterals or more advanced exercises without essence over and over again, won't make them better and is just building a wrong understanding and wrong compensating musculature. So, pay attention! Most of the time, the missing ingredient is hidden in the basics. As Henry Ford wisely said, "If You Always Do What You've Always Done, You'll Always Get What You've Always Got." Β So, let's dive into those basics, polish them with love, and watch our horizons expand! Happy riding! Β #EquestrianLife Β #BasicsMatter Β #HenryFordWisdom Β #InTuneWithMyHorse
